Madame White Snake
opéra
The adaptation for the opera of this Chinese legend around a character half-woman, half-snake, received the Pulitzer Prize for music in 2011. This new, spectacular production seals the partnership between the Opéra Comique and the Beijing Music Festival.
The legend is not unlike that of Mélusine: a beautiful and rich young woman falls in love with a modest craftsman and brings him prosperity and recognition. Until the day a monk discovers the dual nature of the loving wife, half woman, half serpent. A story of interracial love, betrayal and revenge, this popular Chinese tale has been adapted in various forms for theater, opera, and cinema. Here is the most recent lyric version, signed by two Chinese-American artists.
Created in 2010 by the Boston Opera, it received the Pulitzer Prize for music the following year. The work blends Eastern and Western musical traditions to evoke a serious subject, ostracism, while using codes and stylization of Chinese opera.
