Royaumont

The Métaboles are in residence at Royaumont from 2019 to 2021.

A place of work and experimentation, the Royaumont Foundation supports the personal and collective development of artists. Diffusion activities, concerts, shows, meetings complete and extend this support.

For Les Métaboles, this residency is an ideal way to develop the fields of action that the ensemble wishes to carry out: the exploration of repertoires, the meeting with composers, the meeting with other disciplines, the development of professional training.

Les Métaboles, valiant choir

Le Monde - Pierre Gervasoni - La résidence des Métaboles à Royaumont

Founded in 2010 by Léo Warynski, Les Métaboles is a chamber choir created in the wake of Accentus, founded two decades earlier by Laurence Equilbey. However, as its name suggests, the formation is constantly changing to adapt to various types of repertoire. Originally made up of a majority of young people, it now includes seasoned singers such as Marc Busnel and Paul-Alexandre Dubois. Each is capable of performing as a soloist. After having visited the 20th century movements for a cappella choir by Poulenc or Rachmaninov, and having been involved in numerous creations such as "Papillon noir", Yann Robin's opera, the choir is starting a three-year residency in Royaumont. In the meantime, a recording to be released this autumn by NoMadMusic will illustrate a quest for originality (the unexpected Murray Schafer with Ravel and Britten) that is not on the point of coming to an end. "I have a thousand years of repertoire in front of me," says Léo Warynski mischievously.

Through the centuries, Léo Warynski unearths relatives, emphasizes family tunes, in a long line of composers touched by grace. Rameau, offers an address to heaven, a five-part motet rarely given because cleverly concealed in his Treaty of Harmony. Marc-Antoine Charpentier - who was able to observe during a trip to Italy what in Venice was called the "cori spezzati": the dialogue of vocal groups installed on either side of a church - delivers a sumptuous Salve Regina with three choirs. But the centerpiece of this new program is signed Orazio Benevolo, a little-known musician, chapel master at the Vatican from 1646 to 1672. Thanks to the conductor and musicologist Louis Castelain, who patiently copied the score in a Roman library, the Metaboles sing for the first time since the 17th century this four-choir Mass by the Italian composer. A novel, in a way, which parallels the one written by the very young Lithuanian composer Juta Pranulyte.
